Is it plural or singular? I always thought it's plural but found this
recently:The United States isn't a city. It was in a grammar book.

yup; as a country The USA is always singular. I've heard it in the plural,
though, The US are the greatest military power the world has ever known.
I'd say both are correct.

Yeah, even skipping the "of America" The United States is a country, so it is singular (I know, a co, myslisz, ze ja nie? blablabla). Well that's that.
