"On time" means "at the scheduled time". "In time" means "before the
      deadline/scheduled time".

If you had to go to a meeting that started at 5:00 p.m. and you got there
right at 5:00 p.m., you will say that you got there on time. However, if you
got there at any time earlier than 5:00 p.m. (say, 4:30 or 4:50 p.m.), you
should say that you got there in time.

        From "Gigi"

        We've met at nine
        No, that was eight
        I was on time
        No, you were late
Ah yes, I remember it well

i explain the difference to my students in the following way (in Polish):
          ON TIME
przychodzisz sobie do szkoly, i wchodzac do budynku slyszysz dzwonek: Uff!
mowisz, i'm on time (znaczy nie spoznilem sie, ale kurde nie zdaze spisac juz
          homework'a :), lece prosto do sali);

          IN TIME:
wchodzisz do szkoly, halas jak codzien, idziesz pod gabinet gdzie masz
zajecia,i mowisz: i'm in time (znaczy mam jeszcze troche czasu, wiec spisze
sobie prace domowa, oczywiscie z matematyki, bo z angielskiego mam :)

so, this is, arguably, the best method to explain this difference.

In time the use of the phrase “on time” vs “in time” will become clear to you.
