A Helios Airways flight from Cyprus to London's Luton Airport was diverted on
Friday because the pilot believed he had a problem with the aircraft's flaps,
an airport spokeswoman said.
"It was not an emergency landing, it's what's called a 'local standby'," she
said, noting that the plane had landed safely.
A Helios flight from Cyprus's Larnaca Airport to Athens crashed in mysterious
circumstances on Sunday just outside the Greek capital, killing all six crew
and 115 passengers.
A spokeswoman for the airline said flight ZU400 left Larnaca on Friday
morning and had been due to land at Luton, north of London, but instead
touched down at Stansted Airport, also near the capital.
She said all 177 passengers had disembarked without incident and were now
being helped to their onward destinations.
Investigators hope autopsy tests on the victims of Sunday's crash will shed
some light on why the pilot, co-pilot and many passengers on the Boeing 737
apparently fell unconscious before the crash.
One theory for Greece and Cyprus's worst air disaster was faulty air
conditioning or a fire releasing poisonous fumes.
