HARVARD BOOK STORE

Dear Reader,

Whenever an independent bookstore closes, it is a loss for the
community. At its peak in the mid 1990’s Wordsworth Bookstore was a worthy
and
tough competitor. At that point in time, Harvard Square had six full
service bookstores, twenty-three bookstores in all, which contributed to
the square’s rich cultural and literary atmosphere. During the late
1990’s, many of these bookstores closed—Reading International, Booksmith,
and Barillari Books all shut their doors, while the Harvard COOP was
taken over by Barnes and Noble. Now Wordsworth has closed as well. With
all the challenges facing independent bookstores today, it makes sense
to wonder whether Harvard Book Store will survive.

We at Harvard Book Store believe that we will. We know and accept the
fact that the marketplace is changing—the internet and the superstores
provide valuable services and it makes sense that people will patronize
them sometimes. However, independent book stores, and Harvard Book
Store in particular, offer something different than superstores and online
bookstores, and perhaps more valuable. Our customers come to Harvard
Book Store because we are a place where you can be surrounded by the best
books available—where you can see and touch them before making a
purchase. Service is an aim of every bookstore, but at Harvard Book Store and
other independents, customers can find book-loving employees who revel
in helping find a book, and who can give thoughtful and unexpected
advice about a new title. Our goal is to put a book in your hands that you
will love forever. Our customers enjoy the opportunity to leave their
houses and computer screens behind, and visit our community of readers.
For those who love books, Harvard Book Store is an exciting and
stimulating place.

We believe that as long as there are readers who prefer to experience
book buying rather than to simply get it over with, Harvard Book Store
will thrive. We hope that you will join us in our love of books, and
keep Harvard Book Store’s community of readers vital. We welcome your
thoughts.

Sincerely,

Frank Kramer
Owner of Harvard Book Store
