marxx To o czym wspomina Efedra 19.02.05, 17:43 Singer closing in on a big-time leap Grazyna Auguscik succeeds with strong band, new spirit By Howard Reich Tribune arts critic Published February 18, 2005 Many artists dream of achieving a breakthrough--a moment when years of hard work produce an aesthetic revelation. The Chicago jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik appears to be close to such a transformation. And with a little more self-assurance and daring, she just might get there. Performing Wednesday night at HotHouse, Auguscik reminded listeners of the unusual and thoroughly appealing nature of her music and her biography. Born in Poland, trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and based in Chicago, Auguscik has long since merged the serene lyricism of Polish music with the swing rhythms and improvisational techniques of American jazz. Her artistic gestation has not been hasty or superficial. She has spent years collaborating with all manner of jazz musicians. From straight-ahead players to bona fide iconoclasts, from hard-core jazz instrumentalists to freewheeling world-music experts, many of this city's best improvisers have helped hone Auguscik's art. No doubt these musicians have been intrigued by the singer's exotic musical pedigree, as well as the disarming quality of her voice. The purity of her tone, the fluidity of her phrasings and the spare, unadorned beauty of her melodic lines certainly address the ear gently. Yet Auguscik in the past has been tentative on stage, barely asserting herself while shying away from the technical feats that listeners tend to expect from the best jazz singers. As a result, she has been overshadowed by any number of Chicago jazz vocalists. At HotHouse, however, she turned in one of her stronger performances in recent memory. Though she still has a way to go in seizing the listener's attention, she has made significant strides in that direction. For starters, Auguscik has assembled a dream band. With the brilliant John McLean on electric guitar and the formidable Zach Brock on violin, Auguscik surrounded herself with ample virtuosity. Add to the mix Eric Hochberg's bop-to- funk bass, Ernie Adams crisp but evocative drums, Dave Onderdonk's supremely understated acoustic guitar and Ben Lewis' soulful keyboard, and you have an all-star band capable of producing previously unheard sounds. Yet this band proved so effective that it sometimes overwhelmed its leader. With so many superb musicians at work, Auguscik's generally soft-spoken vocals sometimes disappeared into the background. When she stepped to the forefront, however, her silken vocal lines dovetailed exquisitely with the musicmaking around her. In Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," Auguscik produced a plaintive cry that cut to the core of this music. And at two junctures, she offered the kind of hard- hitting scat singing that put her technique to a test, which she passed. But it's the concept that she has hit upon--placing her spare vocal lines in a plugged-in, contemporary, partly synthesized setting--that suggests Auguscik may be on the brink of innovation (as does her new CD, "Light"). If she dares to develop this idea, while taking charge of the band she has created, she could make a difference in jazz today.
