1999,1998 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano
Valdicava
Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
Sangiovese Grosso (a dry red table wine)
Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #158 (Apr 2005)
Rating 1999: 96 points , Rating 1998: 92 points
Drink 2006-2017
Estimated Cost: $140.00
The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a single-
vineyard wine, very fine but from a good, instead of an excellent, vintage.
The nose, though powerful, is more mineral and herbaceous, and though there
are size and concentration to spare on the palate, the quality of the
extraction and tannins is not at the level of the outstanding vintage which
followed. But the weight and grip on the finish are impressive. Drink: 2006-
2017.

2001 GUICCIARDINI STROZZI Toscana Sòdole
Guicciardini Strozzi
Tuscany, Italy
Sangiovese (a dry red table wine)
Review by Robert Parker
Wine Wine Spectato
Issue: Oct 31, 2004
Rating: 90 points
Drink 2007-2016
Estimated Cost: $39.00
Interesting aromas of plums and minerals, with just a hint of black licorice.
Medium- to full-bodied, with mineral and espresso character on the finish.
Provocative yet subtle. Sangiovese. Best after 2005. 2,200 cases made.

2001 Castello di Fonterutoli Siepi Vino da Tavola
Castello di Fonterutoli
Tuscany, Italy
Proprietary Blend (a dry red table wine)
Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #152 (Apr 2004)
Rating: 93 points
Drink 2004-2018
Estimated Cost: $111.00
The superior level of 2001 compared to its immediate predecessor could not be
more obvious in the 2001 Siepi, a pioneering Sangiovese-Merlot blend and
still a touchstone for this category in Tuscany. Very ripe and sweet on the
nose, with an important and balanced contribution of cloves, cedar, and
cinnamon from the oak, it is lush, fleshy, and succulent in flavor, well
supported by silky tannins but with an inner core of strength which promises
fine drinking until 2016-2018.

2000 Castello di Fonterutoli Belguardo Morellino di Scansano
Castello di Fonterutoli
Morellino di Scansano, Tuscany, Italy
Morellino (a dry red table wine)
Review by Robert Parker
Wine Advocate #144 (Dec 2002)
Rating: 90 points
Drink 2002-2008
Estimated Cost: $25.00
A new offering from Fonterutoli emerges from their vineyard in Morellino di
Scansano. The 2000 Belguardo possesses a dense ruby/purple color in addition
to a sweet, opulent texture, notes of minerals, cherries, leather, and
underbrush, loads of fruit, and a plump, chewy style. It should be consumed
over the next 5-6 years.

2000 Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli
Castello di Fonterutoli
Classico, Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
Sangiovese (a dry red table wine)
Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #152 (Apr 2004)
Rating: 89 points
Drink 2006-2014
Estimated Cost: $50.00
The 2000 Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli, effectively speaking the
Riserva bottling even if the house chooses not to call it such, is dark black
in color and with a sizeable and expansive nose which features graphite and
tar along with its berry fruit. The flavors are solid and well sustained, but
the slightly dryish tannins on the close, coupled with a higher than usual
acidity, point to the difficulties of the vintage. Drink: 2006-2014.
5.
2001 Belguardo Tenuta di Belguardo
Belguardo
Italy
Proprietary Blend (a dry red table wine)
Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #152 (Apr 2004)
Rating: 89 points
Drink 2006-2014
Estimated Cost: $64.00
The 2001 Tenuta di Belguardo, made from Bordeaux grapes, is rather California-
Australia-like in its coconut, vanilla, black fruit nose, more concentrated
and intense than the Morellino di Scansano but still a bit austere and severe
on the close. Belguardo is the property of the Mazzei family, owners of
Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti, among the first to move into the Maremma
in search of new territory to plant vineyards. The vines are still young
here, and there is unquestionably much margin for improvement in the wines.
Drink: 2006-2014.

1999 Mastroberardino Naturalis Historiae
Mastroberardino
Campania, Italy
Dry Red Table Wine
Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #154 (Aug 2004)
Rating: 91 points
Drink 2006-2016
Estimated Cost: $75.00
The 1999 Naturalis Historiae, a full ruby in color, offers much spicy
raspberry and plum fruit on its full nose, long and dense tarry flavors and
substantial tannins which will need some bottle time before coming around.
Drink:2006-2016.

2000 Fattoria Paradiso Barbarossa
Fattoria Paradiso
Tuscany, Italy
Dry Red Table Wine
Review by Robert Parker
Wine Advocate #144 (Dec 2002)
Rating: 88 points
Drink 2002-2008
Estimated Cost: $32.00
The deep ruby/purple-colored 2000 Barbarossa (aged in barrel for 10-12
months) exhibits a sweet bouquet of sweaty leather intermixed with earthy
black fruits, vanilla, and meat. Medium to full-bodied, mouth-staining, and
substantial, without being coarse or over the top, it should drink well for 5-
6 years.

2000 P Antinori Guado al Tasso Bolgheri
P Antinori
Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
Proprietary Blend (a dry red table wine)
Review by Robert Parker
Wine Advocate #137 (Oct 2001)
Rating: 94 points
Drink 2003-2018
Estimated Cost: $70.00
Spectacular, the 1999 Guado Al Tasso possesses sweet tannin and
accessibility. Its explosive aromatics consist of smoke, licorice, espresso,
chocolate, vanillin, and celestial black currants. With sensational
concentration, flamboyant flavors, an opulent texture, full body, and
brilliant concentration as well as delineation, it comes across as intense,
balanced, pure, and rich. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.

2001 Angelo Gaja Sauvignon Alteni di Brassica

Review by Daniel Thomases
Wine Advocate #149 (Oct 2003)
Rating: 90 points
Drink 2004-2009
Estimated Cost: $65.00
The 2001 Sauvignon Alteni di Brassica, very varietal in its white melon,
tomato leaf, and green fig scents, is long and mineral with grapefruit and
honeydew flavors, and with only the lightest hint of oak. Anticipated
maturity: 2004-2009.

1988 CAPEZZANA Carmignano Trefiano Vittorio Contini Bonacossi
Rating: 90 Wine Spectator
Price: $ 40
Drink: 2000-2007
A very pretty wine, with vanilla, cream, currant and berry aromas. Full-
bodied and very jammy, with lots of fruit and a long, juicy finish. Slightly
simple now, but impressively fruity and rich. Give this some bottle age. Best
after 2004. 1,200 cases made. (JS
