Dear Ms Platek,

The screening of the program „Gender Equality Paradox” in early 2010 generated a lot of public debate, indeed. I can confirm that this debate contributed to The Research Council of Norway’s decision in 2011 to finalize it funding of gender studies as a separate program. However, these funds were redistributed in order to strengthen the gender perspectives in several other programmes under The Research Council.

As for the claim that the Norwegian government has withdrawn all funds for promoting gender equality, I can assure you that is completely untrue and unfounded.

Norway pursues an active policy in order to achieve equality between men and women. This policy includes both gender mainstreaming and gender specific actions.

Norway's gender-equality act was passed as early as 1978.

The law prohibits all discrimination on the basis of sex and is applied to all aspects of society.

Over time, the law has had positive effects: Today Norway is considered to be one of the most gender equal countries in the world.

In 2012 Norway was ranked by the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report as the country with the third highest level of gender equality.
