The Canadian dollar's 34% rise to US83 cents over the past 2 1/2 years only
strengthens the case for Canada to pursue a common currency with the United
States, two leading economists say.
Thomas Courchene, professor at Queen's University, said the recent surge is
only the latest swing in a long history of currency volatility that makes the
cost of doing business in Canada fluctuate dramatically and discourages
