'Saddam captured' rumour sweeps US market
July 30 2003
The Pentagon said today it had no information to confirm financial market
rumours that US forces in Iraq had captured deposed Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein.
"The short answer is I have no information on that. None," Lt Gen Norton
Schwartz told a Pentagon news conference in response to a question. "I have
no such information," he added.
Stocks fell sharply during morning trading after the Conference Board said
U.S. consumer confidence for July fell to 76.6 compared with a reading of
83.5 in June. The July reading was expected to be 85.0. But just before noon,
the market began to stage a turnaround amid talk that U.S. forces had
captured Iraq's deposed leader.
"At about 11:15 (a.m.), there was the rumor that we had captured Saddam
Hussein," said Jeff Swensen, senior trader at John Hancock Funds.
"Earlier, we dropped on the consumer confidence number which came in worse
than expected. Then we saw it spike on the rumors."
Other traders, however, said the market's early decline was overly dramatic,
and stocks pulled off their lows as investors rethought the significance of
the report.
