Nine Arrested for Bloody Thailand Raid

PATTANI, Thailand - Police have arrested nine Muslim men for carrying out a
bloody January raid on an army arsenal and torching 21 schools, which marked
the renewal of a separatist insurgency in the Muslim-dominated southern
Thailand, officials said Tuesday.



The twin attacks on Jan. 4 raised concerns that insurgents operating in the
region — where a separatist movement has simmered for decades — may now have
links to foreign al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups.

The attackers killed four soldiers at the armory in Narathiwat province and
stole hundreds of guns. There were no casualties in the near-simultaneous
fires at the nearby schools, apparently set to divert government forces away
from the armory.

In subsequent weeks, at least 43 people have been killed in hit-and-run
attacks in southern Thailand. Most victims have been policemen, Buddhist monks
and village officials.

"After two months of investigation into the stolen arms at the army camp we've
arrested five people involved in the incident," police Gen. Kowit Wattana,
deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, told reporters.

He said an additional four people were arrested on suspicion of setting fire
to the schools. The arrests took place sometime between Monday and Tuesday, he
said.

The nine men were charged with using arms for rebellion, conspiring to commit
illegal acts, arson, stealing arms and causing deaths. If convicted they face
the maximum death penalty.

Three southern provinces — Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala that border Malaysia —
are the only Muslim dominated areas in this Buddhist country. An Islamic
separatist movement in the region was put down in the late 80s, but violence
resurfaced in 2001.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks but some government
officials have blamed militant Muslim separatists with possible links to
regional and international terror networks.

Wattana identified the five men arrested in connection with the armory raid as
Makatha Harong, 52; Sukri Mahming, 37; Abdulloh Pohloh Abukari, 20; Manaseh
Mamah, 25; and Sudirueman Dimang Mahlae, 23. All are residents of Narathiwat.

A saw, a machete, a Malaysian flag, some ammunition and documents with
separatist ideology were confiscated from them, he said.

"From the investigation, we discovered that Makatha has the goal of
separatism," said Wattana without elaborating.

The interrogation of the five men led to the arrest of the remaining four —
Mahwae Samoh, 19; Jehhami The, 39; Manahseh Mamaheng, 23; and Abudeng Hawae,
39 — who were allegedly involved in the burning of the schools, Wattana said.
