Treasury shocked by cost of war
The damage caused by the recent war is now estimated at NIS 6 billion, a figure much higher than the treasury's initial estimates.
This figure includes direct damages, such as to buildings and property, as well as indirect damages, such as lost wages.
The treasury was surprised to discover how the sum had grown so quickly over the past few days. This happened for two main reasons: First, only after the war ended were authorities and residents actually able to assess all the damage; and secondly, the length of the war surprised treasury officials.
Practically speaking, the Finance Ministry now needs to find an additional NIS 2.5 billion for the 2006 budget.
The ministries' additional budget requests also surprised the treasury officials, who had originally expected them to total about NIS 2 billion, but now have reached NIS 5 billion.
This amount includes an additional NIS 2 billion transfer to the Defense Ministry. The transfer has been approved already by the cabinet.
Another NIS 3 billion will be given to local authorities in the North and for education, health, firefighting and repairing infrastructure. Part of this sum has already been budgeted and paid out.
