"You may not be interested in war,
but war is interested in you."
Leon Trotsky
Hooyah! We have the Taliban on the run and it is with great pleasure that we
can report a large group of them are in our sights, right as I write this.
War is definitely interested in the Taliban.
Deke here. Happy September.
Well, like I said last month, we are flying around here chasing down the
Taliban big time. And here I thought we were the forgotten war. Heck, we've
been on the move for the last few weeks kicking some butt. A lot of the guys
we're chasing have retreated-leaving beddings and turbans--but I believe we
have surrounded a pretty large group at this time.
Thank god our fly buddies are pounding them constantly from above. A lot of
noise, to be sure! I must say, it is better to be chasing them than to have
them picking us off like in Iraq. Much better to be on the offense and
keeping them on the run.
While I have this brief moment, I just want to say thank you everyone for the
letters and cards that keep pouring in-getting a card once a month is truly a
wonderful feeling for us out here, even though the last one was an
outstanding invoice (I guess that rental store back home really misses the
tape I rented a couple of years ago and forgot to return: Ferris Buehler's
Day Off.), we DO appreciate hearing from you back home. Anyhow, we are
running and fighting and we will not give up.
Right now, the terrain is extremely angular, rocky and not human friendly. No
need for a lawn mower out here, believe me. A lot of the Taliban are like
Puma (and smell like them too) hiding in caves, crevices and clay mounds.
We've offered several of them a chance to surrender, but they haven't and
that is just fine with us, since all they want to do is just shoot guns and
sleep with their buds in these caves.
I don't know. What kind of life is this? I remember as a kid going to the
beach with my parents and we would dig up these mole crabs on the shore who
would live their lives running and digging burrows every time the waves came
over. Well, that is pretty much the life of a Taliban soldier and it begs a
lot of questions which cannot be answered here.
Well, enough already! Time for mailbag.
Dear Deke,
I think that you know nothing about Islam and Kora'an, just like millions of
so-called Muslims. They are Muslims by name only. So I invite you to read the
history how Muslims were, how they live, and how they had the ability to
govern the world with justice and freedom. Please contact this Muslim
scientists just to know you are wrong.
Muslim Scientist
Thank you for the kind words. Let's see. You know more about Islam and the
Kora'an than millions of so-called Muslims? Well, who died and appointed you
the expert? I guess Muslims know how to live and govern the world only when
everyone believes exactly the same interpretation of the Kora'an as the
leaders do and women don't mind being slaves.
If Islam is such a great religion of peace, why are terrorist using it as the
reason to kill? I refer you to one of my favorite books, "Islam for Dummies"
which I think you may be the author. In it, there is a paragraph that says
the following:
"Anyone who takes up arms against Jews and Westerners in the name of Allah,
are total idiots and mental cave-dwellers. AND, those who think they know
more about Islam than other Muslims, will be castigated into the bedrooms of
all those suicide bombers who think they are receiving virgins, but instead
are only receiving bottles of virgin olive oil produced in Israel."
I rest my case.
Dear Deke,
Q. Do the American and Allied forces have any weapons on the horizon to help
them fight these close-quartered battles?
Martin A. Las Vegas, NV
A. Well, Martin, that's a pretty good question and I refer you to one of my
buds B. Taubert (BT) back home who writes about this kind of stuff for
various magazines. Here's what he has to say: (Note, there may be some typos
in this stuff as I'm flying around crazy right now!)
ADVANCED INDIVIDUAL COMBAT WEAPON
Integrated with the Steyer AUG rifle, a two barreled, one magazine, multi
caliber, shoulder fired hybrid weapon is on the engineering agenda. The
current prototype combines 5.56x45 mm with a 30mm top tube housing multiple
lethal and or non - lethal grenades. (Hold it, we ain't done yet.) For the
SEALS, the "BONDI," or "SURF - ZONE weaponry capable of wet or dry operation
is proposed with concentrated and diverging fire capabilities. The six -
barreled carbine will have a "multiple effects" payload of 72 projectiles.
Weighing seven and a half pounds loaded, the weapon will be "immune to
stoppages," because of no breech and its non - mechanical operation.
HANDS FREE COMBATANT
Lethal devices that do not look firearms have been the on the procurement
list of certain agencies for some time. MS has a conceptual answer to a very
effective two-fisted response against an unsuspecting attacker. Resembling a
large hand held massage vibrator and working off a helmet mounted LCD
sighting link, this seven barreled wrist rocket is worn on top of the forearm
and simply pointed at the target. Firing switches are located in a fist /
thumb control module. A device could be worn on each arm giving the wearer a
relatively non - threatening looking, but instant and- devastating defense
option and still have the hands free to perform other routine tasks.
THE MORTAR BOX AND REPEATABLE CLAYMORE
Picture a 110 - pound, ground mounted, but portable, 100 tube 40 Mike mortar,
capable of lobbing 600, or 300 pounds of those nasty grenades, at a rate of
20,000 rpm, per barrel. This experimental area denial and perimeter defense
weapon could fire a variety of ordnance within a narrow or selectable open
impact area at a maximum rate per box of two million rpm. In addition, a tube
launched, parachute deployed CCTV camera could be deployed for post mission
bomb data assessment. These weapons could be remotely activated by unattended
ground sensors as well as subject to manual control. A weapons system of this
type could do away with the requirement for land mines to augment defenses or
deny areas to the enemy.
A variation on this theme is the MS 81mm mortar. Hum V mounted; this 48-tube
crew served weapon could be employed as a direct as well as an indirect fire
weapon with excellent mobility. Each gun unit would have a basic load of 288
rounds compared to the normal 120 round load for a contemporary mortar
platoon of four tubes. In other words, an MS mortar platoon would only
require 13 personnel to fire 1,152 rounds, whereas a conventional platoon
needs 27 individuals to fire 120 mortar bombs. This represents an increase in
force of 850% with a 50% reduction in personnel.
Claymores are one class of "mines" that will probably survive the anti -
mining movement, because they are usually command detonated. However, as
effective as they can be, they are one - shot affairs and usually end up only
slowing down rather then eliminating a pressing enemy that enjoys some depth
to his force. MS has designed a "Repeatable Claymore," housed in a 4x4x6 inch
box that can be either ground situated or imbedded into critical installation
walls. With its 64 barrels, it can fire 258 nine - millimeter projectiles.
In .22 - caliber, a five - pound, 4x6 inch long container will house 100
barrels, with a 400 projectile capability. The mine can be programmed
for "random fire," sustainable for 40 seconds at a rate of 600 rpm to cover a
withdrawal or, "explosive fire," at a rate of 4.5 million rpm for ambushes.
The mine can also be set to "imitate heavy caliber fire."
