Raman Redlands Daily Facts A prayer on the brink of war By GREGORY ELDER For the Daily Facts Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - In the Name of the Holy One of Israel, Blessed be He. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. O God Most High, Most Great, Most Powerful Creator of the worlds, we appeal to you for the peoples of the Earth, as we stand on the brink of another great conflict. As the armies and fleets of the West mass in the Middle East, we make this appeal to you to save your peoples from the scourge of war. Bring peace in our day, for it is only by your great hand that any mortal nation can live in comfort. Have mercy on the men and women of the armed forces of the United States of America and the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Defend them from every foe, keep them from all harm, and bring them home safe and in peace. Comfort and defend the families of those who stand in harm's way, give them the assurance of your immortal love, and dry the tears of those who weep. Open the hearts and hands of the American and British peoples to provide for the needs of the wounded, the orphan, the widow and the bereaved in the time of their loss. Judge of the nations, so many of our allies have deserted us in the hour of decision. If they have forgotten, we pray that you do not forget the souls of the men and women who died to save them from slavery. We appeal to you for the souls of the men who were slaughtered like lambs on the beaches of Normandy, in Belleau Wood, at the Bulge, at the crossing of the Rhine, at the Ardennes forest and in the trenches. Grant the fallen Americans, Australians, Canadians and Britons buried on the continent of Europe in the 20th century everlasting rest and peace. We bless them for their liberation of Europe, and their supreme sacrifices so that the modern children of Belgium, Holland, France and Germany can express their political opinions in freedom, even when they slander us. Let the blood the English-speaking peoples have shed for Europe stand as an everlasting reminder of price which has been paid for political and religious freedom. Lord, you planted a garden between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers and filled it with every good thing, and gave it into the hands of a man and woman to tend. Look with mercy on the peoples of Iraq. Deliver them from the hands of all who oppress them, enslave them, arrest and torture them. Deliver them from arrest, bombardment and harm, protect their crops, their dams, their herds, their cities and their families. Hasten the day when they will have the opportunity to live in freedom, tolerance and justice. King of the world, protect the religious minorities of the Middle East. Let no harm come to the Sunni Kurds, the Iraqi Shia, the Jews and Palestinians, the Babylonian Christians, the Chaldean Catholics and the Ba'hai. Let the day soon dawn when all of the children of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar may dwell in peace and harmony. As Scripture commands us, we pray for the peace of Jerusalem; may they prosper who love you. Lord, send your special care on the Arab and Iraqi Americans in this land who are loyal to our flag and democratic republic; defend those who came to this country seeking peace, and deliver them from prejudice and hatred in the hour of conflict. Everliving Word of God, your Scriptures of old commanded us to pray for the Roman emperor, even when he was a persecutor of your peoples. We pray now for the rulers of the world, for the president of the United States, for the prime ministers of Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, India and Israel, for the chancellor of Germany, the Palestinian authorities, the presidents of Russia, Pakistan, Syria and Egypt, for the rulers of Iraq and for the lords of the Taliban. Turn their hearts to peace and bring to repentance any who gladly seek the death of innocent lives. Send the spirit of repentance into all of our hearts, Lord, to examine our consciences as nations and as individuals to repent our own sins and offenses against your most holy laws. Save our immortal souls and our nations from the sins of pride and vainglory, and enable us to do your will alone, God Most High. Grant us peace, Lord. Amen.
