X takes its toll = acts/effects in the way or to the degree that you would expect of X (typical of X)

X takes a toll = X takes some toll

Now the interesting part: A toll seems to imply that this sense of toll is countable. But is it? We cannot say X and Y took tolls or X and Y took their tolls without altering the meaning of toll. ( X and Y took their tolls from peasants and tradesmen on market days is OK.)

It takes some forcing with a strong "pluralizing" adjective to let the pluralized tolls regain the sense of effects:
X and Y took their respective tolls.
