Shanties are easily distinguishable from sea songs. Shanties were used to co-
ordinate the work of many sailors - no instrument, just voices and beat; the
lyrics is quite simple. They are rarely used as work songs today because modern
rigging doesn't require many people to be working in the same rhythm for long
periods. Life is much easier now ;) Sea songs are more like poetry, they're
usually about life at sea or lovers left behind in a harbour, this sort of
thing.

And BTW, what's the name of these rhythmic THINGS soldiers sing when they march/run - you know, something you can see in American movies. ?

Yes, at least most of them are sea songs.
But sometimes you can hear this:

... then two lines of a text:

I guess in Polish we also distinguish "szanty" and "piosenki zeglarskie". They
are somehow different. "Piosenki" are not as rhythmical as "szanty". At least
my impression.

well, right, you need a special kind of dough to call the thing 'szarlotka' - it must be shortcake not a sponge or puff pastry. But to be called 'szarlotka' it must also contain apples, not just any fruit.

in poland the meaning has evolved and szarlotka for us means ciasto z jabłkami!!
