Most boring book ever

IP: *.238.127.126.adsl.inetia.pl 09.01.05, 20:16
1-2-3 start!

And let's limit our suggestions to the (so-called) classics. My votes go to:

- 100 years of solitude by Garcia; (I am backed here by an EngLit lecturer
who once said "for me it was <3 days of boredom>")
- Magic mountain by Mann - never got beyond page 5...
- Dr Zhivago by Pasternak - jeeesus, that was crap!!!

"Pan Tadeusz" by A.Mickiewicz - the most boring book I've ever TRIED to read:)

btw: "magic mountain" took me 4 years to read...and at the beginning of the 2nd volume it turned out to be...not so bad actually.
      "100 years..." - I loved it!!
      • chris-joe Re: Most boring book ever 09.01.05, 22:07
Have read all of the above except for "The Magic Mountain", although, I swear, I
tried more than once. My personal best- page 45 or so. I find reading this
book very much like quitting smoking:)
Why, oh, why? After all I have devoured all volumes of Proust's "Remembrance of
        Things Past" in one take!

ooops, I have lied- I never tried reading "Zhivago"...
"100 Years" I loved to pieces.

That's interesting... Are you still indulging yourself in that filthy pastime?

          Frankly, I don't believe you!
          • chris-joe Re: Most boring book ever 11.01.05, 20:26
Yes, I still smoke; and no, I still haven't read "The Mountain".

As for Proust- I read it at the age when one does devour books, these days I
merely read them. After Proust, for a long time I wasn't able to accept any
other writer, they all looked so mediocre... untill Kafka that is :)
            • chris-joe ps. 11.01.05, 23:17
and yes, I admit, the "one take" was a long one and broken down to a series of
              small takes :)

aaah! yes, this I can believe (and do)!

PS. Ever tried Beckett's Trylogy? Molloy, Malone Dies?...
                You won't be disappointed!

                • chris-joe Re: ps. 13.01.05, 22:00
I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't, even though I consider "Waiting for
Godot" the best play ever written. The play gives me shivers -it's so "me".
I definitely will get my hands on the aforementioned.
    • chris-joe Re: Most boring book ever 09.01.05, 22:14
Here's another one: Coelho! I wouldn't say boring though, just annoying the
      hell out of me.

        Couldn't agree more!!!

and what's even more annoying is that his books seem to be obligatory reading on
the Montreal metro! Followed closely by Harry Potter productions.
Oh, and "Da Vinci Code" piled up and screaming into my face at the door of every
bookstore and every lousy news stand in town! Here's my solemn vow: I will
never even touch this book, jamais!!!!

          But I digress.
          • jan.kulczyk Re: Most boring book ever 10.01.05, 01:20
Da Vinci's good. Read it faster than it took to download ;)
Then I got Angels and Devils, another book by the same author.
I got through it before I started.

Good, easy read! Can't say very ambitious, but well thought-out and coherent.

The most boring? Probably Ulysses. But it was meant to be that way. I heard it was supposed to give the reader an idea of what a genius of Joyce's magnitude must have been going through rotting in BFE Dublin ;)

I read an excerpt from Da Vinci and IMHO it is bullshit.
Chris-joe, I am going to make such a solemn vow!

Hey, when you actually write something that's as pleasant and quick to read on the train, do let me know, ok? ;)

mann - you're right, mate. i started it in high school & i'm still reading it
(by the way, i'm 27 now :) on the other hand, i loved his buddenbrooks :)

garcia - one of the best books i've read
    • butter_fly Re: Most boring book ever 12.01.05, 10:42

The most boring book ever? Well, whenever I thought a book did't catch my
attention I felt it was me who's not ready for this particular thing yet. I
never felt the book was too boring. Then I'd give the book (or myself for that
matter) another chance after a while.
Now, there is a book I can't grow old enough to read - and that's 'The
      peasants' by Reymont...

It isn't matter of age. but of a special kind of language fragility, I think.

Surely you didn't mean "wrażliwość językowa"? Because that would have been something quite different in English, something like "language sensibilities" or "linguistic sensitivity". ;)

Funny how people associate words in different languages by their sound only. It would be nice to do a thesis about this.. Hmm...

In Search of Lost Time - after 3 or 4 years I'm still on page 100.

Trylogia. I think I was too old when I started reading it (and never
finished); it might appeal to teenagers though.

Libro de buen amor (Book of Good Love)- awful. But I had a lousy prof so I
      blame it on her.

        Moby Dick - fascinating...
the most boring one... that would have to be The portrait of a lady by Henry
James. I will give it another try some time in the future, tough...
