work on your accent! If you get that right, you're set and nobody will ever
question your knowledge of english. Accent, accent, acccent, accent!!!!!
It's the most important factor in studying any language.

I think I know what you mean. nothing much gets said by anybody in most
situations anyway, but as long as you sound AS IF you're saying something,
      you're cool.

how true. however, knowing one or two words to have an accent in is also very
      valuable.

can be an obstackle. People will listen to 'how you say' and not 'what you
        have to say'.

Im not saying that you should neglect vocabulary or other important aspects.
Just practice accent more, just that..... (and I mean MORE)

I think you end up with what sounds like a weird affectation if you attempt to
speak with what sounds to you a proper accent without the basic language skills
            to support it. besides, a foreign accent is often considered a charming thing;
Polish accents are not considered to be ugly on the whole, perhaps not as
charming as French or cute as Scandinavian, but at least not as comic as German
(vee ask zee kveshtions), Spanish, Chinese or Jewish.

Even the best accent doesn't sound good if the speaker makes grammar mistakes.
Learning a foreign language is a complex process, so you can't say that one
aspect of it is more important than the other, unless you study language for
particular purpose, e.g. you need the knowledge of English in order to
understand some source texts that haven't been translated into Polish and you
don't need fluent speaking or good accent, all you need is to uderstand what is
      written.

I guess it depends where you live and what you do for a leaving but in general
of course it's good not to have a heavy foreign accent.
By far in my mind it's more important to speak correct English and always in
      full sentences.
I guess it goes without saying that one has something interesting to say, right?

Try to live in London with an East European accent. You will find out very
quickly how you will be labeled, even if you have something interesting to say
        and speak the language.
The moment I open my mouth, this question comes in my direction :'Where are you
from?' and the rest of the scenario I know by hard.
I am one of those people who will not deny my 'polishness' n London but many,
many of my friends pretend that they are not Polish and try to put on more of
        an english/posh accent.
        Sickening experience.

I couldn't agree more. I've been staying in the USA for 2 years now. Speaking
with american accent makes me sound only funny and has already caused many
          misunderstandings:)

          so what happens next?
how DO English people treat you when they find out that you are Polish?

          Magda,
Maybe they can't place your accent hence the question?
If people ask you answer whats the big deal?
          Europe sucks anyway.
          Cheers,

MM is right on the money!
You boys come down here to the Dixieland and try to explain something to the
mechanic or call someone on the phone, so they don't see your ugly face. Try
using some of that "proper" polenglish then and see how far it will take you :-
      ) They'll think ya'll are craaayzie!

Accent doenst matter. You could spend countless years trying to rid yourself of
your native accent without any luck.

Natives will always notice. They have spoken english for their entire lives.
They can pick out even the slighest difference in pronunciation.

Grammer, in my opinion, is more important as it allows you to be understood.
What good is an accent in getting an idea across.
