Reply to introduction

« A set form cannot be decreed for a reply to an introduction. “How do you do” is the most correct , and may be followed by repeating the name of the person presented , but “Pleased to meet you” “Nice to meet you” are not in good taste” (Culture & Good manners” by E.F.Cushing)

Are there “Pleased to meet you” / “Nice to meet you” of such a bad taste as the author said?
I live and work in continental Europe where very “international standard” English is in use. And also a cultural context of presentation differs: Just imagine some Polish, German and Serbian guys how-do-you-doing themselves with a strong accent on Belgian soil, no mention that in the meantime they desperately try to avoid “la bise” (a greeting kiss on cheek) from our French–speaking colleagues, both female and male…
I am simply afraid that “how do you do” among non-native English speakers may not sound natural. I heard some British h-d-y-doing at the very introduction moment but then “(was) Nice meeting you” followed at the end of conversation …

What you would advise then as a correct and polite reply to introduction nowadays?

Thanks for making me laugh out loud!! Personally, I say something
like 'Hi' or smile and say (you won't like this) 'Pleased to meet
you.' But Ive greeted people before and they've completly bypassed
the polite response and one straight into dilogue mode! I think
these days society is far less formal and perhaps the correct
response is whatever you feel comfortable with.

But why desperately avoiding that legendary kissing ritual ;-))?
I've found it really astonishing that some well educated people
still present some French manner. I was introduced to some
francophones and positively suprised to hear that old
fashionable "enchante" - greeting. Since then, I've got used to it
and I use it myself ocasionally. But, it's quite continental and I
do not pretend to be a snob, it's rather due to an unevitable strict
hierarchy in Germany. Anyway, I still think a simple hallo very
      helpful.

Perhaps the English are trying to be more continental!! I often do
this myself-as I like the informality-but have never
said 'enchante'.. except while in France..What do you do in
        Poland? :)
