"ta" & "cheers" instead of thanks?

Dear Jonathan, perhaps you could tell me how "thank you" or "thanks" started being replaced by the aforementioned "cheers" and "ta"? Really curious about that.

Ta (in advance :-) )

      Hi there,
I understand that 'thank you' originates from the German 'Danke'
also rendered as 'Dank u' in Dutch.

'Cheers' in medieval times meant 'mood' for eg in the 1400's someone
might greet another with, ' "what chere be with you?" It was about
this time that 'chere' also began to mean 'good humour.' The Oxford
English Dictionary began to record it as a salutation before a drink
      around 1820.

'Ta' is just modern day slang for 'thanks.' :-)
