What does it mean to be second to none?

No one or nothing is better.

Although in principle there could be others just as good, it is often not meant
to mean that (as in adverts saying something like "no other toothpaste is
better"). I read an article once that traced many of the more idiotic English
sayings back to Shakespeare. I think this was one of them.
