The strain of the high dollar was evident in the November jobless figures, where the unemployment rate rose to 7.3%, up from 7.1%. The hardest-hit sectors were manufacturing (losing 17,800 jobs) and tourism (down 12,800 jobs). Since July 52,000 manufacturing jobs have disappeared. A survey by the Canadian Auto Workers estimates that if the loonie stayed at 85 cents US, the manufacturing sector would lose 400,000 jobs by 2007. The film industry has also taken a big hit, with production across Canada estimated to be down by at least 20%.
