"There are many ways to ensure kids and young adults have healthy bones but
milk isn't one of them, according to a huge scientific review published in
the prestigious journal 'Pediatrics' this year.
Researchers reviewed all the 58 scientific studies on calcium and bone health
published since 1966 and discovered that 72% of them found no benefit to
bones from dairy products. The rest found that dairy's contribution to bone
health was very small.
It's back to the drawing board for health advice as dairy was shown not to be
the best source of calcium because of absorption problems. Dark green leafy
vegetables were revealed to be a better source and the calcium in pulses and
sweet potatoes was absorbed equally as well as that in dairy. But - and it's
a big but - cow's milk contains animal protein and sodium that cause the loss
of calcium from bones in the urine. In one end and out the other!
What does help children to grow strong bones is, firstly, exercise, spending
time in the sun, cutting down on salt and caffeine, not smoking and eating
plenty of fruit and veg. The study, by the Physicians Committe for
Responsible Medicine, recommends children and adults get at least 400 to
500mg calcium a day from plants such as sesame seeds, dark green leafy veg,
tofu, fortified soya milks, wholegrain bread, pulses such as baked beans,
kidney beans, butter beans etc., and nuts - especially almonds.'
