Paper
Breakthrough Retail Technology Drives Growth for Gyricon Media
August 20, 2002 (Ann Arbor, MI) – Gyricon Media, Inc., (www.gyricon.com), the
leading provider of SmartPaper™ media and integrated network signage solutions,
announced today the opening of its new manufacturing facility in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, for producing electronic media and signage solutions for the retail
market.

The $10 million manufacturing facility is located in Ann Arbor’s Scio Township
and is expected to create more than 500 jobs by 2004. Gyricon Media chose Ann
Arbor because of the significant number of technology businesses and
manufacturing plants already in the area, the skilled labor pool and the
proximity of the University of Michigan. Earlier this year, Gyricon Media
relocated its corporate headquarters to Ann Arbor from Xerox Corporation’s Palo
Alto Research Center (PARC).

The 48,000-square-foot manufacturing plant will be home to production of the
company’s patented SmartPaper™ media and signage solutions. SmartPaper™ is a
reusable display material that has many of the properties of regular paper, but
is electronically “writeable” and erasable. It is a component of Gyricon
Media’s MaestroSign™ Systems, a combined software / hardware solution that
provides retailers the power of true dynamic pricing, while insuring consumers
of pricing integrity on their purchases.

With Gyricon, retailers can link and synchronize their signs with the rest of
their retail communications and data, allowing them to change product names,
prices and descriptions electronically, making old-fashioned printed signs
obsolete. With the opening of the Ann Arbor manufacturing facility, Gyricon
Media will have the capacity for mass producing SmartPaper™ for a market that
is expected to grow.

Gyricon Media recently completed pilot tests of its solution with several major
retail and media organizations, including Macy’s East, a division of Federated
Department Stores, Inc., and Dow Jones & Company, which publishes The Wall
Street Journal and Barron's. Gyricon Media is planning additional pilot tests
later this year.

Gyricon Media has also reached an agreement in principle with Xerox Global
Services, a division of Xerox Corporation, as a sales and marketing alliance
partner. Using its consultative approach to help clients redefine processes,
and create and share information, Xerox Global Services is well positioned to
sell and support Gyricon Media’s unique network signage solutions to the retail
industry.

Produced in a roll, like conventional paper, SmartPaper is actually two sheets
of thin plastic with millions of tiny bichromal beads embedded in between. Each
bead is smaller than a grain of sand and has a different color on each half
or “ side ”. The hemispheres are also charged differently (i.e. positive or
negative).

SmartPaper beads reside in their own cavities within the flexible sheet of
material, so that under the influence of a voltage applied to the surface, they
rotate to present one side or the other to the viewer. This image stays in
place until a new voltage pattern is applied, which erases the previous image
and generates a new one.

zeby uzyskac zadowalajaca przecietnego mola ksiazkowego rozdzielczosc
papier prezentowany przez philips jest zdaje sie nieco lepszy

Mój pomysł na epapier polega na tym, ze "kartka" jest zrobiona z połączonych ze
sobą stycznie przeźroczystych mikro kuleczek (mikrobańki) w których umieszczone
są półmetalowe pół plastikowe troszke mniejsze od baniek kuleczki. Połowa
kuleczki jest więc "pomalowana" na biało a połowa na czarno. Taka e-kartke
wystarczy teraz umieścić na drukarce - elektromagnesie(odpowiedniku skanera)
który poustawia z dużą dokładnośćia i rozdzielczoscia kuleczki odpowiednimi
stronami. Kuleczki utrzyma w swoich pozycjach siła tarcia wystepujaca m.
kuleczką metalowo-plastikowa a przeźroczystą bańką.
I nie potrzeba zasilania ani krzemu i innych p*ł a cena mojego
e-papieru może być śmiesznie niska.
