Khobar Towers
Nineteen U.S. servicemen were killed and 500 people were injured on June 25,
1996, when explosives packed onto a truck exploded outside the Khobar Towers,
a military housing complex in the city of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Those
responsible left the truck shortly before it blew up. Saudi Arabia later
arrested a number of suspects, but refused to allow the FBI to interview
them.
In June 2001, the U.S. Justice Department issued a 46-count indictment
against 14 people, 13 Saudi Arabian Shiites and a Lebanese man, in the
attack. U.S. authorities have also accused the Iranian government of direct
involvement in the bombing. Four of the suspects were placed on the FBI's
Most Wanted Terrorists list on Oct. 10, 2001.
