which dicionary

IP: 213.241.38.* 29.07.04, 20:56
I'm going to buy one - my 7-year old Dictionary of Contemporary English is
almost in pieces ;)
Please, give me piece of advice - which dicionary do you prefer? I mean, what
are your personal feelings? The level is more or less advanced (I even took
the CAE exam this year;)
I skim through few dicionaries in a bookshop, and the macmillan dictionary
(in red cover) looked preety nice to me. What do you think about it?
thanks in advance...

My teachers recommended macmillan...so I bought it. How dumb I was;)
I truly regret now:( cambridge is much better because it has more exaples of
words in sentences or phrases. In macmillan you can find an exaple of "girl" in
a sentence, but when it comes to more complicated terms very often there are no
      exaples at all!

I have OXFORD Advances Learner's Dictonary. I can recommend it h all my heart.
It is clear, detailed and every word and phrase are illustrated with examples.

This is my second attempt at posting here. Grrr...!

I've had the Dictionary of Contemporary English for over 8 years now (in
hardback) and I still think it's the best English dictionary I've ever used. My
advice would therefore be to buy another copy of the same dictionary :-) I've
used Oxford's Advanced English Dictionary but it's not the same (although the
language level is similar). I don't really like the layout there.

PS. Should I say hi to everyone? It's my first post here and I think I'll be
      coming back :-)

I really liked my old Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English - the hard
cover one, so I guess 2 years ago I bought a new edition of it, and I still
liked it, but recently I got sth I love - that is new Longman - they call it
The Living Dictionary and it is perfect. Simultanously I have been using Oxford
and Webster and definitely nothing can beat Longman :)
So, go ahead and get yourself one, you will not regret it.

I also recommend Longman dictionary - it's truly very good. But on-line version
of Cambridge dictionary is also good - I found it very useful when I had to
look up Australian English words. Here's the link
        dictionary.cambridge.org/
