my turn, please!

19.01.05, 22:01
Would anyone be so kind and write an essay for me on English speech acts? It
doesn't have to be long, around 3000 words should do it. Thanks in advance!
Cheers.

Sure! No probs... but, what exactly do you mean by 'speech acts'? Do you mean
      the so called 'speaking activities'?
      • axxolotl Re: my turn, please! 19.01.05, 22:15
        I was expecting "Buaahahahahaaaa..."

        I mean this: online.sfsu.edu/~kbach/spchacts.html

I've never heard the term "speaking activities", but then I've only started
researching the topic (I'm supposed write a dissertation on it.....buahahhaaa)
and haven't even read closely through that essay in the link above.

          I know! I knew, I mean...

From your link: "In general, speech acts are acts of communication. To
communicate is to express a certain attitude, and the type of speech act being
performed corresponds to the type of attitude being expressed. For example, a
statement expresses a belief, a request expresses a desire, and an apology
expresses a regret. As an act of communication, a speech act succeeds if the
audience identifies, in accordance with the speaker's intention, the attitude
          being expressed.

Some speech acts, however, are not primarily acts of communication and have the
function not of communicating but of affecting institutional states of affairs."

          Here: Buaahahahahaaaa...!!!

On the other hand, how about this:
"If I were you, I’d leave now." - Conditional 2 (as far as a
          Grammatical is concerned)
You’d better leave now, hadn’t you? Modal
          auxiliary/Question tag (Grammatical also)

          But now say it aloud!
If I were you, I’d leave now. Giving advice
(speech act, so say it aloud! even if only to yourself - Function)
You’d better leave now, hadn’t you? same as above + a hint
of obligation (=before it is too late)

Great, thanks for your timely contribution to my headache; I really appreciate
            it!

So, am I genuinely thankful, or am I being sarcastic?

              > So, am I genuinely thankful, or am I being sarcastic?

Well, I could go for an obvious 'ONLY YOU KNOW', but I won't!...

              I'll say: Both, alternately!

Am I being clever or drunk?

Stop prevaricating! Time is against you.

prevaricate? hmm, that's a good word.

      Do you really mean it?

You're very asking for such a thing is despicable!

Why? I'm only asking for 3000 words and I need about 20,000. 3000 is what? 8-
10 pages double-spaced? I'm sure that between you, Kulczyk and chicken in
shorts you can whip it up in a couple of hours :))

          Yes, but...

it's supposed to be YOUR work :).
OK, I'm backing off (who am I to preach?) - but I'm not gonna help.

Here's a practical suggestion for you: what couldn't you say in 17 000 words
that you'd say in 20 000? Keep in mind that even 20 000 words on the subject
would only be a drop in the ocean and that there's much to be said for brevity
and clarity. I appreciate you might not want your dissertation to be 8-10 pages
shorter than those of your fellow students. There's a simple answer to that:
you can adjust the margins to make them wider or type in slightly larger font -
      or indeed do both.
Just think how many people's lives could be touched if your chosen mentors
contributed additional 2 hours to this forum.

You're right, probably not much more, at least nothing significant.
20 000 is the absolute maximum. It's supposed to be between 15000 and 20000,
with the 15000 being the preferred length.

        > you might not want your dissertation to be 8-10 pages

Naah, don't really care, it's not a competition, I'm the smartest anyway ;)

        >there's much to be said for brevity and clarity

Swiete slowa. Wiele wypracowan, ktore czytalam i poprawialam, to bylo
takie 'lanie wody'. 5 stron o tym samym tylko innymi slowami a czasem jeszcze
o czyms innym kompletnie nie na temat (no bo czym wiecej tym lepiej, nie?, he
he) a mozna to bylo w trzech paragrafach.
