            - I'm sorry but I smell a bribe over here... It's impossible to pass an exam
            like that ;)

So what? Who cares? Thousands of people achieve that every year. You just need
to go thru some standard things and follow some patterns. After yuo've read
Bywater you're bound to get A

You're wrong, Impressed!I'm sure there's no possible thousands of people passed
Proficiency, because I passed FCE and there's written an amount of people all
over the world who posses that certificate, not so much. And much more people
pass FCE than CPE.Proficiency is really very hard, even british people are
surprised and admire how do foreigners are able to pass that!

        Tomek, my CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well,Wisdom, looking at it from the point where You are it may seem to be
impossible But ...It is an exam proving your ability to use english for
academic purpose WHAT means that for some, not very well educated Britons it may
appear difficult. Tomek is just a young genius and for him it was a piece of

Proficiency! Now that is a difficult exam. Well done. I aim to try it next
June. Can anyone recommend a good coursebook?
            • kociamama Re: Proficiency!:) 10.09.02, 10:42
Masterclass Proficiency is the best I guess. It has a logical layout, pays
attentions to all the needed skills and articles are not only studded with
useful vocabulary but they're also interesting.
              I strongly recommend it.
              Good luck.
    • pawel78 Re: I passed Proficiency!:) 09.09.02, 22:29
To Tomas84: Congratulations! Write us something more: Where did you take it?
How was it? What grade did you get?
To the others: CPE may be difficult, but it definitely is not impossible to
pass. When I was taking it in 2000 (I had attended a course with the book The
Nelson Proficiency Course, Revised), I felt like - errh - not quite certain to
pass it. It was quite hard. But I passed, even got a B.
To those intending to take CPE in the future, I recommend the book, "Grammar
and Vocabulary for Cambridge Advanced and Proficiency with Key" by R. Side and
      G. Wellman (orange cover).
      • eliz123 Re: I passed Proficiency!:) 09.09.02, 22:35
Yes, it's a good book. the publisher is LOngman. Apart from that BBC tv and
        radio and the net.
        • eliz123 Re: I passed Proficiency!:) 09.09.02, 22:38
But what about a coursebook? For FCE I used passkey, and for CAE masterclass,
but for CAE I haven't seen much.

        Hi there!:)

        > To Tomas84: Congratulations! Write us something more: Where did you take it?

I took it in Białystok, my home city, well, to those astonished, yes, it is
possible to take, and, even more, TO PASS Proficiency in Bialystok. I mean some
ppl claim it's impossible since Białystok is sooo small, or soooo far.

        > How was it? What grade did you get?

I did a preparation course, at one of the English schools. And, I suppose, it
did help this way or another, but still, the teacher can only motivate you,
it's you alone that has to be dilligent enough to pull it off. The exam itself
was a nice experience but slightly too strenuous to repeat it:) When I left the
examination room, I was almost sure I lost 500zl. Sometimes it's good to be
mistaken:)I, too, got a B,and it was wonderful to see it typed there!

I followed Progress to Proficiency, or something like that, by Leo Jones(the
second half of the book), and then Proficiency Gold, by Longman (the first
        half:))

What about Proficiency Masterclass? I'd like to take it in june, but ppl claim

well, I was 18, and it doesn't matter a bit, whether you are 10 or 40, what
does matter however, is your fluency, and believe it or not, but a successful
Proficiency candidate wouldn't have made 7 mistakes in such a short text as the
            one above... Think FCE.

ps, I have never been to an English speaking country, looks like books do their
            job!!

Well, it is a well known fact that Bialystok has been a main centre of Polish
immigration to the USA for many many years. Size and distance are relative
properties, and I wouldn't worry about them. However, because so many people in
Bialystok have relatives living in the USA, the conclusions are obvious. Still,
CPE is a difficult British exam wherever you are, and I am sure that 80% of
native speakers wouldn't be able to pass it - especially American people. So,
          CONGRATULATIONS!

What are the benefits of having passed Proficiency in Poland? Does it increase
your prospects on the job market or qualify you for some specific linquistic
activities? Or is it just another step in the language learning process?
In the UK, it gives one a qualification to teach English in any non-English
speaking country. Just wonder if we have the same Proficiency in mind?
