At the risk of being judged singularly sexist by some
befuddled oddballs show the guts and go for "Everybody
does his best", because you have the inalienable right to
      retain your sanity.

"Everybody does its best" is preposterous.
Faced with the acusation of being either sexist or
asexual, stick to your guns and let them call you sexist
      any day.

everybody does "their" best is the best one.
        "his' is also acceptable

"their"??? so in case "is everybody going out?" we should ask "are everybody
going out"? i think that we cant use in one sentence :is and their!

OOhhh, I`m affraid we CAN. In your sentence "are" can`t be used `cause it`s a
different kettle of fish :) .
            explanation :
If I said : Everybody does its best - it would refer to "it" which isn`t nice.
everybody does his or her best - would be sexist
so "their" - it is neutral.
            pozdrawiam.

Listen honey, your English is diabolical!
            You are embarassing yourself
Get yourself a good book on English grammar and usage. (And read it!)

Hey , you silly teacher, instead of giving a good and clever example you'd send
your pupils off to the library. Typical, very teacher-like. (There is nothing
wrong about grammar books but some might have doubts and are brave enough to
ask - with you that's a waste of time)

Hey, whippersnapper, you are a hick all in a doodah about
              the everybody doohickey.
This is not about what some say, but about grammar.
YOU do your reading, something decent, free of semantic
              rationalizations and politically correct embellishments,
and not by a doodly-squat women's libber or HIS
descendant. Hop to it, and fast, before the lady decides
              not to accept your apology.
