TO TRANSLATORS OF NOVELS

IP: *.wan.aol.com 05.09.03, 11:05
Hi,

I would like to get into the translation business. Can anyone give me any
tipps as far as translation of novels into polish is concerned? what does the
whole process look like? should I contact the publisher first and advertise
my service + a book I would like to translate? Or is it rather the publishers
themselves who commission a book to be translated?

I would be grateful for any response...

Cheers

What is wrong with her English? Besides "tipps" and "polish" and not using
capital letters in the beginning of a sentence? Minor, insignifact errors
really, especially if you're typing fast and not proofreading.

sentences sound clumsy and unprofessional as for the future translator of
            literature

Her sentences are fine. She wasn't writing a novel here only asking a
              question.

                I agree

clumsiness of stces is not a capital offense. What's more, people who quote
whole texts insted of simply replying just piss me off.

thanks for all the tippppps and for those who stood on my side :-)

no offence, but some of your reactions sounded typically polish to me - why
don't we put her down, let's alwasys question things and be critical. that's
what I really dislike about this otherwise beautiful polish culture.
it wouldn't matter to you if i told you i was billingual, would it? if her
english does not sound like from a book, it must be wrong! people, relax!
I thought that speaking another language entails open-mindeness, but maybe i
      was wrong.

anyways, all the best to all of you.

As far as I know, you should get in touch with a publisher. I tried it a couple
of times - it's best to call them (Rebis, Zysk etc), usually once a year or so
they collect samples from translators (samples - a translator'a nightmare), and
then tell you to wait... I don't think you have much of a choice as far as
choosing the book is concerned, unless you know a great book and you manage to
persuade the publisher to have a look at it, but - no offence - I guess they're
much more into the business than an average reader. It's not easy to get into
this business, besides - there's much higher demand for technical and legal
translation than that of literature. Anyway, all the best, let us know how
        you're doing.
