That is why in Poland people usually use debit cards instead of credit ones. Let's hope this situation will change when we join EU in May 2004.

There's simply no competition in Poland between banks and companies offering
this kind of product. Result: supplier's market.
Until the early nineties Canadian banks offering MC, VISA, AMEX required
annual fees as high as $100. Throughout the decade many other financial
institutions (credit unions, trusts, and more) started to issue their own
major credit cards. Today the annual fee for using/having major CC is
laughable. Why would you pay for that if you can find plenty of no fee cards?
On the contrary, many of those issuers offers quite attractive reward programs
for using their cards. I myself have been using for several years General
Motors/Toronto Dominion Bank VISA card. Two years ago, when buying a car from
Pontiac/Buick dealership I knocked $2,500 off the ticket price thanks to the
card. It took just one phone call. BTW, the avg cc interest rate in Canada is
roughly 18%, in the States slightly less than that.

Anyway, I think that awalk is right. With more financial institutions from UE
having access to the national marketplace there will be more competition which
is always healthy for consumers.
