President Donald Trump has made a striking statement about the Moon.
On September 6, Trump posted a picture of the Moon on Truth Social with the words “THE MOON IS OURS” alongside a U.S. flag.
Trump did not give any explanation for the post, leaving its meaning unclear.
The U.S. is a party to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which says that the Moon and other celestial bodies cannot be claimed as national territory. Countries cannot establish sovereignty over the Moon simply by claiming it.
The post comes as Trump continues to promote a stronger U.S. presence in space. His administration has also backed policies supporting American activity and the use of space resources, including resources found on the Moon
