At all costs, avoid sounding abrupt. The following are examples:

“Hang on.”
“Hold on.”

The following would be more appropriate:

"May I put you on hold?”

“I need to transfer your call to (dept.) so that they can answer your question.
May I do so?”

And please remember: the tone of your voice conveys more than the words you use.

There is an excellent book that deals with language pragmatics. It's actually
by Anna Wierzbicka and she compares Polish language to English and she also
talks about other languages and their speech acts. I think she also touches a
bit on the politeness theory. It reads quite well, but I don't know if there
is a Polish translation.

She was my tutor at the English Language Institute (or whatever they call it
nowadays) at Warsaw Uni, many a year ago. Her English was very .... Polish.
Want a real, home grown authority on linguistics? Check out Jerzy Rubach, of
the same humble origin; not an easy reading though.

Well, if I remember correctly she left Poland for Australia rather late, in her
early thirties I think, maybe a bit earlier, so that's understandable. What I
wonder though, does she write her books in Polish and then translates them (or
has them translated) into English? Anybody knows? I'm just curious.

And speaking of translations, how do you translate "second language
acquisition" ladnie na polski?
