WHAT IS THE POINT?

IP: *.in-addr.btopenworld.com 08.10.02, 18:15
Have been browsing through your Forum for a couple of weeks now just to try
and sus it out what it is all about. And I am stuck! No debate, no
contraversy, nothing that matters to man or beast. Some semi-learned
linguists, loads of ego trips, few know-alls and occassional desperados in
search of a partner from overseas. At least the latter are honest about their
motives for occupying the web space. The rest are just struggling to
establish their linguistic supremacy and prove ...what exactly? In the great
scheme of things it really is an utter waste of time to deliberate when 'any
milk' becomes 'some milk', providing it's not 'that milk' or, God forbid,
just 'milk! How about employing some common sense or simple instinct? Some of
you lot can single-handedly kill the joy of learning English for generations
to come. In the name of what precisely?

      nat,
"in the great scheme of things" most deliberations are "utter waste of time"
anyway... Still, time wasting could be done much more interestingly. But look
what happens to threads that dare to ask questions other than linguistic - they
      die under their own weight.
The Point is probably to go through all you mentioned (ego trips mostly) until
the next phase, maturity. It takes time.

Your posts show you don't struggle to do that, as it comes out naturally (that
is, you're gifted or something), yet a kind of linguistic supremacy sticks out
of your 'many a learn[id] comment', if you know what I mean.
If you know what the PC or ENTER stand for, just lay off asking questions like
what is the point of this forum.
      > In the name of what precisely?
      Precisely.

Sadly, web space is free indeed, hence those who in real life have precious
little to contribute, feel free to roam the net and express the triviality of
their being. I imagine, in your mind you must be of highly advanced level of
linguistic attainment. And the shocking knowledge of computer terminology,
really!. PC or not PC, its EXIT time, dear.

You must be a pain-in-the-ass type in the RL, as well.
And I am sorry for those who have to put up with you on everyday basis.

Save the pity dear, for yourself. Ability to reason your argument is clearly
not your strong point, in any language. Coping with me is surprisingly easy if
you allow yourself to step down a notch from the self imposed pedestal and get
some sense of humour while tumbling down. And out of curiosity only - do you
find it easier to express yourself in abbreviations? Find full words too
troublesome to stomach? Oh well, look at the bright side - you seem to have
mastered your ABC, at least as far as... M for milk, naturally. THAT milk, get
it? Well, you've got ample time to crack it before the cows come home. OAO.

Beg your pardon sisi, forgot to mention, yet again, that the pain is actually

Humour? Are you sure you know what it means? Come on! Nobody's gonna laugh if
you admit that the sense of humour is just an expression you've picked up on TV.

Verbal abuse, spitting and quite possibly GBH are your endearing ways. Quite
typical means of self defence when intellect fails you. Are you sure Bydgoszcz

It's rather ya who seems a semi-learned linguist or a know-all. And you are
trying hard to establish your supremacy by nonchalantly neglecting grammar
rules (the milk, any, some) I suppose that everybody realizes it's not an
issue of a significant importance, and it doesn't disturb the communication.
The only reason for asking is curiosity or making sure. Nobody asks ya to
visit this forum either, it was your own choice in an attempt, unsuccessful as
it seems, to boast of your English a bit.
      Regards.

        Hi belferka,
been there, done that, bought a t-shirt, ie have been a student and a teacher
too .. once. Have never tried to prove any supremacy and remain open to
constructive criticism. However, can't tolerate semi-experts who attempt to
numb the others with their oh so deep analysis of linguistic equivalent of 'to
be or not to be' in reference to the most trivial aspects of the language.
That's what really got me going. Never intended to bring the debate into the
gutter it ended in thanks to my adversary (??) who could so clearly benefit
from a short/sharp course of anger management. Sorry if caused you offence -
        none intended. Take care.

(if you like to hear it 'toiletwise').
          .....
And don't flatter yourself. You're just another cluster of characters on the

I take it you now spare no effort in search for my contributions on the Forum -
even where they are clearly not intended for you. How flattering. Clearly the
experience has enriched the little you and hence the desire for more. How
satisfying. You see, I don't find it impossible to be civil towards people who
have opinions/principles different from mine and express them in a manner
generally accepted among humans. Gutter vocabulary so obviously turns you on -
so be it. It takes all kinds to make the world go round. You have established
your area of expertise - can't argue with that. May glory be all yours. Should
I further desire to enrich my knowledge of lav-wisdom I shall consult local
yobs, (they speak English after all). You are thereby declared redundant,
superfluous and surpluss to requirements as far as any future discussion I
might wish to participate in. Go and bury your head - you know, that organ on
top of your neck, opposite end to the object of your curious obsession.
