      Windows Update Failure Error 0x8007007b
      Was this post helpful ?

Having initially tried using my WSUS server to patch my Dell built
Vista Ultimate PC, it would not even pick up the server.

Having switched back to internet based WU, the patched are failing
to install with the error code 0x8007007b

I also now tried installing telnet, but that also failed.

I seem to get messages with the source 'servicing' in the system
      event log stating:

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package
KB930857 (Update) into Install Requested(Install Requested) state

This is not a UAC issue, since I tried switching that off and
      rebooting.

I have trawled many a forum and dev site, but can not seem to even
find a clue to the issue, let alone an answer.

      Please help.

I am having a similar issue with my custom built system. If I set
Automatic Updates to Never Check for Updates, the system is mostly
functional. When I try to download the updates though the service,
or if I have the Auto Update service set to anything other than
Never Check for Updates, the system becomes unstable until after a
reboot and disable of the service. In the System log, their are
multiple failures for Windows Servicing, here are the details of one
      of the failures:

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update

      Thanks for the reply John

I get exactly the same problem...downloading the upadates is no
issue, it even begins to install, but fails on the last hurdle :

"failed to complete the process of setting package KB928089 (Update)
      into Staging(Staging) state"

it seems to install some packages and not others. I also note that
it fails installing telnet. Just aswell I keep my old faithful XP
build gaurded as my monitor stand ;-)

If anybody could shed some light on our mutual problem...

Thanks for the reply, although the referenced article is not a
solution for the problem with this build. The failure error code is
different, and the event logs state:

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package
      xxxxxx (Update) into Staging(Staging) state

      or

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package
xxxxxx (Update) into Install Requested(Install Requested) state

      rather than

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of setting package
xxxxxx (Software Update) into Default(Default) state

Furthermore, the fix asks to delete a registry key not present in my
      system.

Do Microsoft Vista-Group personnel read this? I cannot sign this O/S

Im having similar problems reported on my home computer running
      Vista Ultimate x64.

I don't have a hands on problem at the moment that seems to be
caused by this, but simply noted that I today had 81 errors from the
last hour (booted my computer up an hour ago). Where the followin
      ones are:

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update
932596-1_RTM_neutral_GDR from package KB932596(Update) into Staging
      (Staging) state

      or

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update
      937143-48_RTM_neutral_LDR from package KB937143_2(Security Update)
      into Staging(Staging) state

      or

Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update
Trigger_2 from package KB937143_2(Security Update) into Staging
      (Staging) state

With some variants to numbers, KBs....

When I check I have hundreds and hundreds of these a day going back
      until I installed the computer????

They are all "Servicing" and different references, what the?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      /Kristian

We have a similar problem as well.

The message "Windows Servicing failed to complete the process of
setting package KB929916_10 (Security Update) into Staging(Staging)

Same Problem with installed Windows features
      Was this post helpful ?

We have the same problem: Lots of "Windows Servicing failed to
complete the process of setting package * into * state". Further, if
I use "turn windows features on or off", I always get the
message "An error has occurred. Not all of the features were
      successfully changed".

Windows Vista x64 Ultimate, german version

Installations which seem to be possible important for that problem
      (in correct order)

      - english language pack

      - Visual Studio 2005

      - IIS

      - Some Visual Studio hotfixes

KB931712 seems to be unappropriate for me because there is no
      registry key HKLM\COMPONENTS\StoreDirty

the error code means, "invalid device name or path specified"

have you modified the location of "program files" folder?

Vista Home Premium Backup Fails (error 0x8007007B)
        I'm running Vista Home Premium.

I recently migrated many files from a computer using Linux.

When I attempt to create a backup using 'Backup and Restore Center',
        I get
        the following error:

"An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve
        the
error: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is
        incorrect.
        (0x8007007B)"

I have narrowed the problem down to 'Documents' - i.e. if I deselect
'Documents' in backup settings, I can get a successful backup.

How can I identify the offending Document file? I have hundreds. Is
        there a
log that will show the details of the fault, including the name and
        location
of the file it tripped over?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm currently running without a
        complete
backup and this makes me very nervous. I'd like to avoid re-
        installing Ubuntu
on a second drive just to make backup images of my Vista drive.

        Thank you.

CoCreateInstance fails with ERROR_INVALID_NAME (0x8007007b) if

IS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO EMERGING OR UNIQUE TOPICS, OR IS INTENDED
        SUPPLEMENT OTHER KNOWLEDGE BASE INFORMATION.

        Action
Call CoCreateInstance (directly or indirectly) to create an instance
of a COM object that is implemented in a module which was built with
some Isolated COM settings in its manifest. There are several
wrapper classes that could have been used to make the
CoCreateInstance (or CoCreateInstanceEx) call indirectly, or you
could have a call directly to that function.

        Result
The HRESULT return code may be 0x8007007b (ERROR_INVALID_NAME), if
the COM sub-system was not able to load the DLL that implements the
        COM object.

        Cause
In cases where the Registration-Free COM was not correctly
completed, and the embedded manifest is not correct or complete, the
LoadLibrary call may fail. Ole32 attempts to load the DLL as part of
the process of creating the object, but an incorrect manifest may
cause it to return STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_INVALID (0xc0000033). This
error gets propagated back to the return from CoCreateInstance as
ERROR_INVALID_NAME (0x8007007b). This may be misleading, since the
path and filename of the DLL may be perfectly correct.

        Resolution

If the Registration-Free COM is desired, it should be implemented
correctly. Here are some articles that may be helpful in correctly
        implementing this feature:
