How learn to write in egnlish

21.06.11, 14:21
Hello everyone

I'm first year student of English philology. Lately I failed my final exam of practical knowledge of English. Although I passed grammar, i wasn't enough good in writing part (which consit of writing an essay, narrative or description and all of them must have more or less 250 words, so it's not so long). I have to prepare for a second term exam in september and I wonder, how could I learn to write well in English during holidays. Of course the best is to practice, but I am not willing to pay someone every time he (or she) will check my essay or something. Have you any idea how to practice writing yourself? Maybe you know any useful books you can recommend me?

It would be useful to find someone who could go over your work with you and discuss the mistakes you're making. You can learn a lot from mistakes :)
Once you know the specific areas you need to work on, you can target your learning. Can you get feedback from your tutor on that point? Is it your vocabulary, style, sentence structure, essay structure etc that let you down?
If I were you, I wouldn't limit myself to working on written language alone; practising your spoken English and reading lots can only help.

Looking at what you've written here ...

      > Hello everyone, (comma)

I'm a first year student of English Philology. Recently I failed my final exam of practical knowledge of English. Although I passed grammar, I wasn't good enough (>I didn't do well enough) in the written part (which consisted of writing an essay, a narrative or description of about 250 words, so it's not so long). I have to prepare for a second term exam (>a retake) in September and I wonder, how I could learn to write well in English during the holidays. Of course the best way is to practice, but I am not willing to pay someone every time he or she checks my essay (or something?). Have you any suggestions (ideas) how to practice writing by yourself/myself (>how I could improve my writing by myself)? Maybe you know of any useful books you can recommend to me? (>any books you could recommend?)

Not exaclty perfect corrections, but it's a starting point.
      Good luck!

What does English Philologist do, after she or he finishes the studies? (a genuine question).

My suggestions (regardless of your current problem), that should help you to be on top of things are:

            - read in English - normal books you read every day, just for fun. After a while you will pick up the sentence structure and you will use words and whole expressions without the need to think about it

            - watch TV ONLY in English. If spoken word and dialogues are to much at this point look for films and show on which you can use subtitles (but again, an English ones!)

            - google for forums run by native speakers that help with learning of English... you can write there, discuss subjects that are an interest to you (not necessarily English language itself) but at the same time the will be some one to correct what you have wrote

Two first ones are the most fun though and easiest to do. They will also enrich your vocabulary without any extra effort.

It's one of those many newfangled pedestrian pretences to commonplace individuality, right?

There is no better way of learning to write than reading what the people excellent in writing have already written. It means simply- reading books. Press articles will do as well to some extent. You can buy English novels for a song- Allegro.pl offers a large variety of them. As an excercise, you can, or I'd rather say- you should, precise and recapitulate parts of the text in writting trying to capture the essence of that given section. It is crucial to choose books that are to your liking. If the plot is not interesting for you you will hardly concentrate on it. Needless to say, you will not be able to remeber anything.
Besides your exam problem, it's impossible to be fluent in any language without systematic reading.

Start with Reader's Digest and Merriam Webster's dictionary, (yes one word leads to another).
        Use acapela.com for pronunciation.
Elbow grease and midnight oil make wonders.
