From Dictionary.com: cutting-edge - "in accord with the most fashionable ideas
or style". However I understand it as Polish "nowoczesny" rather that "modny".

What are your perceptions?

I think it can be either, depending on the context. Something that has the
cutting edge over its competitors may be either more fashionable/popular or
more technologically advanced than the rest of the field or both.

"The cutting-edge clothes designed in lavish fabrics and trendy colors that are
hanging on the racks of this spacious store will make you shiver with pleasure."
- probably just fashionable.

"Cellphone on the cutting edge of cool" ie to die for and using the latest
technology - both meanings.

"The ancient art of cartography, with the help of technology, is now on the
cutting edge" - no offence to cartographers...

Can you confirm it as a real expression? It almost looks like a mixture
of "cutting edge" and "have an edge over sb" - but you're the boss :).

I'm not sure... it was all a cut and paste job from Google eg:
"There is no denying that the private sector has the cutting edge over the
public sector."
"...as the company has years of experience in this field, and thus it has the
cutting edge over the other ..."
Now that you pointed it out,I think I used the phrase rather clumsily...
Would it sound better if I said 'a product that has the cutting edge over its
competitors...'?

Cutting-edge; in my understanding means: super-modern and usually is used in
describing the technologi.

Thanks for the English-to-English translation and the examples. The closest
translation to Polish from the above mentioned is for me the last one. It seems
it's difficult to pack it into one word, however "wyrafinowane technologie"
sounds good to me.
