artnat Re: Native or Polish teacher? 18.06.03, 16:48 Native teacher? Send a chemistry teacher to teach Polish in England an you'll have the same effect. He speaks Polish, but can he teach them something? Well, I doubt. A native can't teach you too much, but with natives you can practice a fluency of speaking. -------------------- rhapsody.fan.pl "I don't need to be a global citizen 'Cause I left my nationality" Bad Religion - American Jesus Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś

Can you tell me why it isn't possible for a native to teach well.......all a native has to do is learn all the basic grammar rules to know how to explain these things...have a little experience and i ensure you that he will be better than any Polsih teacher. Gość: yola Re: Native or Polish teacher? IP: *.icpnet.pl 18.06.03, 22:39 I'm afraid that there are very few people who can talk about the language (unless they have some linguistic knowledge gained during their studies). How many Polish people would be able to explain a sentence order in Polish? Or distinguish between noun cases to explain the endings used? Speaking a language fluently (like natives do) is one thing, but speaking about the language and grammar rules is something completely different. In my opinion, in the early stages of learning a foreign language a good Polish teacher is indispensable to give good foundations. In more advanced stages a native speaker alone would be sufficient. Gość: Tomek Re: Native or Polish teacher? IP: *.chello.pl 18.06.03, 23:04 For me the best option is to have a polish and native english teacher together. This was made in my prewious school. We had five lessons a week with a polish teacher on wchih w we were learning all the grammar and other stuff, and once a wee we had a meeting with a native speaker and we were just having a chat about recent events. The best I think was playing soccer with kids from other classes while being "unabled" to speak polish (because our native did't like when we were talking in polish). Sorry for mistakes:) Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
Gość: 1 Re: Native or Polish teacher? IP: 157.25.99.* 20.06.03, 12:11 Who knows? There are good natives and good Polish teachers. Remember - Native speaker does not mean qualified teacher. Best is a naturally gifted teacher with an education to back it up. A Polish teacher should have proficiency level and a pedagogical background, a native already has a good level of English (hopefully) and also should have the pedagogical background. Beware of native speaker cowboys with no teaching certificates, equally beware of Polish teachers with teaching certificates but no language certificates. If you're looking for a language school those are the questions you should be asking about their teachers. I believe you are within your rights to ask to see a teacher's certification. All schools cost a lot of money - if they want your money they should be willing to fight for it by proving the quality standards in the school which are, of course, entirely dependent upon the quality of the teaching staff. Gość: Borsuk Native or Polish teacher? IP: *.icpnet.pl 20.06.03, 18:31 Gosc 1 talks a lot of sense. A good teacher is a good teacher. Make sure you ask language schools what qualifications their native speakers have. They should have a CELTA (Cambridge) or Trinity certificate - these are the basics for a native going abroad to teach English, i.e. certificates in practical teaching skills. There are plenty of 'cowboy' native speakers around, but there are many who know exactly what they are doiing, as their qualifications should show. I Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
