How a foreigner can obtain an A-level in English Language?
    • facet_normalny Re: How to get an A-level? 23.11.08, 12:18
I understand A+ as advanced GCSE graduate.
And in this context is my questions as well:
      1. Is to compare e.g. ESOL programm with GCSE for english people?
      2. Maybe only Entry Level 3 (with pass exam, of course) is same level like GCSE
and last Level2 is like A+?
      3. I understand this path with ESOL programme, cos i'm from Poland and i know
that e.g pass ESOL entry level 3 exams is enough to do Life in the uk exams. Of
course people from other countries (no-english speaking)have much less knowledge
about english than people who are growing up with this culture, this language.
Question is how to have much more progress with language? is that of course ESOL
program, is that reading books and newspapers, watching tv, listen to radio,
talk with other people etc but maybe is any other learning path for other languages?

1: GCSE-"General Certificate of Secondary Education"-is an academic
qualification awarded in a specific subject, for example, History
2:GCSEs are generally taken by pupils aged 14-16 years old whilst
        attending secondary school.
3: Some then go on to take 'A' levels if they have attained A-C
grades in a minimum of 5 GCSEs.
4:ESOL-"English for Speakers of Other Languages"-an ESOL
qualification shows that you are a proficient user of English as
opposed to being specialised in aspects of (for example) a GCSE
qualification in English Literature where you understand the
        relevance of Marlowe to Shakespere.
5: You could use your ESOL qualification as a mature student to gain
entry into UK higher education-such as a degree course-though you
should always check with the educational institution beforehand to
see what their entry requirements are. The Open University is an
        excellent option for online learning:

The best way to learn to speak English is-in my opinion-enrol on an
English course that gets you speaking and learning new words for an
hour every day; start reading a free paper on a daily basis like
London Metro and speak English outide of school as much as possible-
markets are a good place to practice. :-)

There are various ways to study English 'A' levels. Here are a
couple of distant learning links below:

      www.icslearn.co.uk/gcse-A-level/a-level/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_term=a_levels_uk

      www.uk-open-learning.com/?gclid=CM2IhZTmjZcCFQoi3godQ1uwDA
You need to check with each education centre as to their spoken and
      written English requirements.

Thank you. I was told I'd need to have 3 A-levels to get into an
university. Though I've got two notes from a Polish exam which would
be assessed as A-levels, I don't have any assessment of my English
language. So I try to find a proper way to obtain it. Unfortunately
there is no possibility to enrol in an ESOL course in my local
college this year. I'll try something else.

so is the polish matura at the same level as A level? what is an
equivalent and do british universities accept it?
          • jonathan.oakley Re: How to get an A-level? 25.11.08, 19:16
Yes, I understand the Polish Matura is the equivalent of the
English 'A' Level. British Universities should accept it-I know
Edinburgh University do: please see link below:

If you are a mature student the university may not require you to
have 3 A' levels or equivalent. Rather than an ESOL course you might
want to think about an I.E.L.T.S course + exam as this tests a
persons ability to study in English at undergraduate or postgraduate
level. Most universities accept scores of between 6-7 as being
suitable for undergraduate study in English. Check out this link for
