The artificial milks for babies which have come to be called infant formulas are
manufactured to internationally agreed standards. As they lack all the enzymes,
anti-infective properties and growth factors, they cannot really be compared
with breastmilk. However they are assumed to be safer than the unmodified animal
milks and cereal gruels used in the past. What does surprise many people is that
powdered infant formula (PIF) contains disease-causing microbes or pathogens. In
2002 outbreaks of serious infections and one death amongst babies in a US
hospital intensive care nursery were traced to Enterobacter sakazakii within
PIF. The particular product was withdrawn and the US FDA banned the use of all
PIF in hospital nurseries. Belgian babies had also become seriously ill and two
had died from the same cause. The US FDA regulations had stated that a certain
amount of ‘colony forming units’ (that is germs that can multiply) were
acceptable. PIF was not guaranteed nor required to be free for pathogenic
organisms. In 2004, a WHO/FAO Workshop discussed the illness and deaths caused
by Enterobacter sakazakii and Salmonella. Both pathogens survive the heat
processes of production. Other ‘toxigenic’ pathogens “such as Clostridium
botulinum, Staphylococcus aureus and other Enterobacter” can be found in PIF.
The workshop noted that “the true magnitude of the problem is unknown due to
lack of surveillance”. Among 10 key recommendations, the workshop called for
regular alerts to the fact that PIF is not sterile and may cause serious
illness, and the manufacturers should be “encouraged” to reduce pathogens in
products. All my working life the discussion of infection In artificially fed
babies had focused on faulty preparation by mothers and carers. The whole ‘baby
milk issue’ started because ‘we’, the clean, educated mothers could artificially
feed correctly and ‘they’, the dirty, uneducated mothers could not. We will
never know how many thousands of babies have died from pathogens in the tin
because the process was masked (or exacerbated) by feeding with unhygienic
water, bottles and teats.

Były w Empiku. Teraz widzę nie ma. Zresztą, one nie były tam faktycznie, tylko
importowane.

Już od 3.50-4.00 GPB. Sama tam kupiłam za grosze. Nie wiem czy amazon wysyła za
granicę. Jak nie, to jak ktoś strasznie chce to zamówię i wyślę do Polski.
