Ruda Śląska-A City looking into the Future

16.10.03, 16:11
Looking from a historic perspective, the modern districts of Ruda Śląska:
Ruda, Godula, Orzegów, Chebzie, Nowy Bytom, Wirek, Bykowina, Bielszowice,
Kochłowcie and Halemba used to be independent places. The present city
borders were established in 1959. For years, heavy industry has dominated
the landscape of Ruda Śląska. Even today, many families are associated with
one of the five local coal-mines.
Local authorities have directed their efforts at creating a modern,
friendly city that can present an attractive offer both to residents and
visitors to the city.
Investments in development and youth education are considered here as
important as investments in the city infrastructure. In addition, Wirek
2001, a town planning project is being implemented. The project provides for
the creation of commerce, business and service center comprised of offices,
restaurants, parking lots, and gas stations, in other words all the
necessities required for the proper functioning of a modern city with 200
thousand inhabitants. In the first stage of the investment, Dutch Plaza
Centers will build a commercial and entertainment center with a multiplex
cinema, 24-hour shops and parking lot.
The investment program is being implemented based on the 'City Development
Strategy' and 'Study of Conditions and Directions for City Development in
Ruda Śląska,' which were adopted in 1997. The program includes major
investments scheduled for the years 1999-2003. Some of these have already
been implemented, others will be initiated in the near future. The top
priority is to build a city friendly to its residents and open to visitors
and investors.
