Mozna tu zastosowac analogie do matematyki - tez jest mathematics. Otóz prawdopodobnie wzielo sie to stad, ze zarówno matematyka jak i fizyka po lacinie koncza sie na a. Natomiast koncówka "a" w lacinie jest atrybutem liczby mnogiej. Stad prawdopodobnie przyjeto w angielskim fizyke I matematyke w formie mnogiej. Patrz wyjasnienie:

Jak dla mnie nie pełni żadnej roli poza byciem ostatnią literą w wyrazie, bo rzeczownik 'physics' jest singular, więc Physics is boring/interesting.

All those –ics nouns are collective and look plural but can be either singular or plural in meaning: they are singular when they name an entire body of knowledge; plural—when they mean more than one principle, law, theorem, property, characteristic, etc. that belong to the filed/science and can be individually invoked.
E.g., what is the physics (=what is the physical principle of operation) of the internal combustion engine?
What are the mechanics (=inner workings) of the internal combustion engine?
