English grammar wanted :)

17.09.02, 14:59
Hi! I'm looking for a good grammar and vocabulary book (advanced level).
I also want to buy a good dictionary. Could you recomend me something? I
learn English myself, so it's very important for me :) Thanks!

      I like:
Advanced Language Practice by Michael Vince - published by Macmillan Heinemann

And the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (English, English)
      or Oxford Wordpower (English-Polish)

'Grammar and vocabulary for Cambridge Advanced and Proficiency'
is also good, but, it's been mentioned before.

If you just want to revise grammar I recomend Polish Grammar by SIUDA - just
ask for SIUDA, the yellow one,it's perfect for students with mathematical -
logical approach to learning...but me being a visual type I also liked it.and
          it's very cheap

            CHEAP and unfortunately NASTY!

Like most of the Polish grammars this one contains many mistakes. Usually they
rip off the stuff from an Oxford or Longman publication, modify it abit, and in
            doing so screw up.

So in my view this, and every other Polish publication relating to the English
            language is best avoided!

can you give me some examplesof mistakes from SIUDA? maybe I didn't spot them
as I didn't cover the whole thing only some parts. I would be really grateful

How English Works by Michael Swan , it's greater!!
          • nyo Re: English grammar wanted :) 24.09.02, 11:56
Michael Swan - he's the man!

As for the inferior Polish grammar - I didn't buy it. I took a look in the
bookshop and spotted several errors in the space of five minutes.

Even if they're cheaper - don't waste your money on a Polish publication.

I love both Swan's grammars - How English Works and The Good Grammar Book -
but I'm not sure if they are so good for self-study -but for teaching -
              great!!!

Swan is great. Self-study or class - I like them.

Why not have a look at Michael McCarthy's "Exploring Grammar in Context" for
                  some real examples.
        • Gość: Ali Re: English grammar wanted :) IP: *.poznan.cvx.ppp.tpnet.pl 24.09.02, 20:50
Maybe, but don't you reckon he gets a bit dull? I'd go for old Swanny's "How
          English works"
          • Gość: Ali Re: English grammar wanted :) IP: *.poznan.cvx.ppp.tpnet.pl 24.09.02, 20:54
McCarthy for higher levels and Swanny's "How it works" for Int/ Upper. McCarthy
deals more with spoken grammar and a few interesting distinctions

              An interesting 'three way' discussion!!!

I agree. Things got a bit confused back there. I can't get to grips with this
forum at all. Anyway, I agree with all 3 things I said.
