why when we name big public affairs we use (sth)+gate , i.e. watergate,
rywingate and so on ???
I was looking for it in the dictionary, but gate is only gate - nothing about
stinging and such things...

Where did you get this idea from? Watergate is a name of the apartment complex
in Washington D.C. that's all.

arrested in the burglary of the Democratic party headquarters in the Watergate
apartment complex in Washington, D.C. McCord was working for the Republican
party."

after the Watergate scandal the gating of things became a
fad in the media.
