I've started working in a secondary school and although everything's even
better than I thought it would be (in comparison with primary school I used to
teach at :)) I have a problem with speaking activities. I have 17 and
18-year-olds and most of them just don't want to speak. I know they don't feel
confident but what annoys me most is the text 'I won't speak to HIM!' because
they're supposed to be working with somebody they don't like. They sit in a
circle, speaking to the person sitting next to them, so sometimes they are not
quite friends in a pair.
Do you have any ideas of some quick (!) pair matching or maybe I should
rearrange the classroom for every lesson so that every time they sit with
someone else (but then they'd hate me :)). Or what else can I do to encourage
them to talk in pairs???
