Lisping English

IP: *.proxy.aol.com 06.10.02, 21:51
One thing that polish students who study english do and it's the greatest
mistake on their part is that they doesn't pronounce words softly enough.

I think most of them do it because they afraid, that if they pronounce
words softly; (with your tounge outside and mouth half open) it will sound
kind of like lisping (seplenienie)in Polish, and as you know only small kids
without teeth do that...

Which sounds do you pronounce with your tongue sticking out of your mouth?
Interesting idea, Sar, but I don't go for it.

Good question MIxalot. For example the "th" sound, which most polish students
of english language almost automatically pronounce as "v"
The reason is simple; Poles and other slavs articulate sounds with mouth
barelly open and tougne and lips pressing against each other.

In english language the physical part of sound articulation si quite the
oposite, lips barelly toutching and mouth visibly open and tounge loose.

I remember my friend a southerner from Tenessee who spoke with mouth open, I
was always wondering how can he utter anything with lips never touching each
          other...

There is a simple way to learn proper pronunciation of troublesome "th".
Just ask students to lisp, in pronunciation of words "zuzanna" [delta]
and "sasanka" [theta]. They will surely do it correctly.

By the way, lisping appears in other European languages (e.g. Spanish, Greek).
