My friend bought a T-shirt in Ireland with a picture of a cow holding a
sign: "golf sale". I guess it's some kind of a word-play or an idiom but I
can't figure out the meaning. Any ideas? :)

Nie sadze zeby to byla zadna gra na slowach. Jezeli pogooglujesz to znajdziesz
      nastepujacy cytat w wikipedi:

"Siege - Frank and Bobbins get sacked and find jobs standing on the street
wearing sandwich boards saying 'golf sale'."

Jest to pewnie nawiazaniem do serialu "Feel the Force":

      That's what I found:

      Golf Sale t shirt.
Classic London design, these boys at Anon where the first to do the T. If you have ever walked down Oxford Street in London you will know the score. Navy
