Ma być “weren’t” i „had taken”, dlaczego?

think ?

I wnna ask if somebody of you - dear readers, whenever thought about tenses
in English. I bet you did! But I wanna know, do you really feel differences
using Past tenses while speaking? I wonder if Poles can really use proper
tense in proper conditions. For example. I know how to say a sentence:
Dzisiaj kupiłem gazetę - I have bought a newspaper today. But when you say -
Kupiłem gazetę dziś rano, you must say - I bought a newspaper today morning.

powinno byc "What time have you got to work this morning?"

Many of them (w sensie problemow opisanych w piosenkach) have
autentic autobiographical background (including being rejected by
mother or experiencing problems with teachers), therefore "RTR"
becomes for him (w sensie wokalista i teksciarz) a way to .... i
teraz brak mi słowa "rozprawic sie" with the ghosts from the past.

podręczniku, z którego obecnie się uczę, znalazłam pewne zwroty, z którymi mam
problem. Napiszę całe zdanie, żebyście znali kontekst:
1. They're OVER THE HILL.
2. He's HEADING FOR A FALL.
3. He's ON THE SLIPPERY SLOPE.
4. Her POWERS ARE WANING.

1) "I WOULD smoke, but I gave up last year." Is it a correct sentence? I
remember that WOULD is used for repeated actions in the past, so it sounds
fine to me.
2) "He WOULD always be the first to arrive at parties." Is it a good
sentence? I've read it in a student's book & I'm confused about the usage of
WOULD now (see point 1)

I know that we can use both of them to express past habit, but
in "rozszerzona matura" exam, there was use of english exercise, where you
should choose would or used to. (There were also 2 other possibilities, but
they don't fit.)
I will be grateful for answer.

Mam 1 pytanie dotyczące konkretnego przykładu z ćwiczeń:
'Did they understand what you said to them?' he asked me.
odp. podana do tego przykładu w kluczu: He asked me if they had understood what I had said to them.
Niby wszystkie reguły zostały zachowane:
past simple - past perfect
ale czy nie powinno się unikać większej ilości past perfect w zdaniu?
przecież nie zawsze trzeba zamieniać past simple na past perfect. czasem można pozostawić past simple bez zmian...
Możnaby było wobec teg...
